When was the last time you asked someone to recommend a shop?
These days, most people just search on Google for everything. And the businesses that show up are not always the oldest or the best. They are the businesses Google believes are relevant and trustworthy in that area.
So how does Google decide who to trust?
Your Google Business Profile, or GBP, is how Google introduces your business to people who are searching for what you offer. It is the box that appears with your name, address, phone number, photos, and reviews. It is free.
And it starts with something most business owners never think twice about: your business name.
That name is the very first signal you send to Google about whether you are a real, trustworthy business.
Think about meeting someone for the first time.
They say their name is Rajesh. But their visiting card says Raj. Their shop board says R.K. Enterprises. Their website says Rajesh Kumar & Co.
Four different names. Same person. But something feels off.
You are not sure who you are actually dealing with.
Google feels the same way. When your name looks different on your GBP, your website, and your shop board, it’s not confident you are a real business. And when Google is not confident, it simply does not show you to new customers.
There is one more mistake business owners make all the time.
When they see the name field on their GBP, they stuff extra keywords into it.
“Best Electrician in the City.”
“Trusted Since 1995.”
It feels like it will help more people find them.
It does not.
Your GBP already has other fields for services, descriptions, and other details. The name field has one job: your real-world business name. Just your name.
When you add extra words that are not part of your real-world business name, you can violate Google’s guidelines, and your profile can be suspended.
Not just push you down. Suspend your profile.
Your business name is more than a label. It tells Google, and your customers, who you are. Get your name right, and something simple starts happening.
People in your area search for what you offer. Google sees a business it can understand and trust. Your business appears in front of people who had no idea you existed five minutes ago.
That is the power of getting one simple thing right. Get that right, and you have a stronger foundation for everything else on your GBP.
